Devon Angling's fishing on holiday help page.

In addition to being the Uk's Premier Fishing tackle supplier, we also have a tackle shop and the walk -in area where most of the rods we have available are accessible to be handled and tried out in our large free car park area.

Over recent years, during summer periods, we have found that there are many inexperienced but keen fishermen and women wanting to have a go. The following information is designed to help in the choice of tackle and locations near to this area, although much of the advice can be applied to other areas of the country. With any sport, the prices you can pay vary from next to nothing to the top. We have tried with our advice to steer a sensible and practical route to suit all.

Bass Fishing. - Bass are usually plentiful during the Summer months in South Devon when the water is calm and clear. During the colder months they are more inclined to be caught with rod and line during or after rough weather. The main diet of bass is sandeel. Sandeels can be seen on the water's edge on calm mornings and evenings close to the shoreline. Not far behind them are the predatory fish such as Bass & Mackerel. Basically, there are three ways of fishing for bass. By line and bait on the bottom, by lure or float fishing. Probably the most enjoyable action is by lure fishing. A basic good quality bass rod, reel, and a couple of lures will set you back around £55.00 and give days of enjoyment and feed the family. A good set up will also be suited to float fishing and even carp fishing without looking out of place. Places to fish - Slapton, Hallsands, Beesands and many more

Mackerel Fishing. - A family favourite. Usually lots of action and fish on the beach. Pick the right time in the evening or early morning on a calm day and mackerel should be on the breakfast or dinner menu. A simple beach casting combo of rod, reel line, feathers and a couple of weights is yours for as little as £45.00. The kids will love it and want to go time and time again. When they are older guess what they will still talk about? Places to fish - Slapton, Hallsands, Beesands and many more

Plaice and dabs. - Rather more relaxing than spinning and feathering for bass and mackerel. Some of the Southern beaches and rocks lend themselves to great relaxing bottom fishing. Use light tackle on the end with small hooks, even down to size 4 and a small bait tipped with a small slither of squid.

Any help and advice we can give you is offered without charge from our friendly staff. Condition and best fishing practices change from day to day, so we can advise you from our experience and feedback from others fishing. We have a large car park in the centre of Chillington next to the area health centre. Do not be confused by the petrol filling station you will pass on the way if you are on the way from Kingsbridge in East Charleton who advertise tackle and bait - Our shop prices are the same as those advertised and marketed as mail order on this web site and national fishing magazines such as Sea Angler and Total Sea Fishing. Our bait is fresh, alive and second to none.
